Science: Aims/Philosophy

We place great emphasis on scientific literacy – the knowledge and understanding which students need to engage in all aspects of life. 

We also emphasise explanations, theories and modelling in science. We place strong emphasis on encouraging students’ participation in their own learning process.

Key Stage 3

National curriculum in England

Student joining us in Key Stage 3 follow a stimulating curriculum based on promoting a wide understanding of Science. Our aim is to provide a high-quality science education establishing the foundations for understanding and progressing in future science studies. Our students are taught the fundamental aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science in all aspects of life.

 

Assessment:

Continuous assessments are regularly held on all aspects of learning including science knowledge, and how science works. Continuous assessment takes place at the end of each topic. General assessment are done at the end of each term and the end of an academic year

Key Stage 4

Science A

Assessment:

Students are assessed regularly on all aspects of their Science knowledge, including literacy understanding and the way in which Science works.  Assessment takes place at the end of each topic. All KS4 groups take key examinations towards the end of an academic year and the final exam at the end of Year 1.

Alternative courses at KS4: 

BTEC

Students may also follow a BTEC Level 1/Level 2 First Award in Principles of Applied Science. Through a combination of practical experience and written assignments, this course covers the impact of Science in various careers and real World scenarios.  This qualification provides level 2 learners with the knowledge, skills and understanding in broad areas of science.
