Pavilion Leads the Way in Barnet

Careers Event 2018 - Great Success

The Careers Event 2018 was opened by the Lord Mayor, Brian Salinger and MP Teresa Villiers. Students from across the Pavilion school attended, as did a group from Christ's College.

Over 20 local businesses and organisations volunteered their time to demonstrate an activity based on their work.    They encouraged students to have a go for themselves.  As a result, students iced cakes, made earrings, built brick walls and created electrical circuits, not to mention making flower arrangements, boxing, street dancing, dog grooming, learning about first aid and music production.

Sharon Glover, Operational Manager for Post 16 Education and Skills, said this about the event:

"Today's careers event at the Pavilion was a resounding success! In my considerable experience working in lAG, the event had all the right elements which engaged young people. Experts and professionals from construction, catering, nail art, music technology, street dance, boxing, dog grooming, floristry and other sectors were on hand to inform, demonstrate and encourage young people to consider the fantastic opportunities available. The event had a real buzz and purpose with hands on tasks proving very
popular. Speaking to young people the response was overwhelmingly positive and appreciative for all the hard work put in by staff to make this event both timely and relevant to their futures.
I congratulate the Pavilion for a truly impressive event!"

Daniel Aldred, from the office of our MP Teresa Villiers, said:

Well done to the staff at the Pavilion School in Whetstone for putting on an excellent careers fair for students today. I was happy to be there for the formal opening of the event by the Mayor of Barnet, Cllr Brian Salinger, and headteacher, Joanne Kelly.

Many students at the school come from disadvantaged backgrounds and some have found it difficult to engage in mainstream education. The Pavilion provides a crucially important stepping stone to help them fulfil their potential. Today students had the opportunity talk to a number of businesses and local employers about potential career choices.

With our best wishes
